Principles, Code of Ethics, and Five Fold Path

January 2, 2012

Principles , Code of Ethics and the Five Fold Path provide moral reminders for students of USA Karate Academy of Shoreline.  While each member receives a complete copy of these affirmations and character building quotes and sayings in their new student “Welcome Packet” this post was requested by parents, and former students alike.  As we welcome the New Year, it is a good time to reaffirm our beliefs in harmony within oneself, striving for personal development each and every day, and making a commitment to being a positive influence even  in the most difficult situations.  Happy New Year!

If an eligible testing candidate misses testing, now what?

December 4, 2011

Most of the candidates scheduled for testing on December 3, 2011 passed their tests, some missed,  and there are a  few students who were present that did not fulfill all the requirements to pass.   A makeup test may be available for those who missed but arrangements must be made and cleared with Shihan Joni Sharrah.   Advanced students require more time for assessment so students currently High Blue and above that missed their evalution may need to wait for the next full testing cycle to present their skills to the Board of Black Belts.  Those few students who were not able to demonstrate all the required technical skills to pass and graduate to their next belt rank are being encouraged to arrive to the dojo at least 15 minutes prior to their regular class start time,  are invited to practice at Open Gym, and strongly urged to practice at home at least 15 minutes on the off days so that when the necessary skills are demonstrated, the student will be able to complete their test and earn their next belt rank.  Each case is different so it is essential for those with questions and concerns to address Shihan Joni Sharrah directly for help in understanding the options available to you or your child.

Congratulations Graduates You Rock!

December 3, 2011

Traditional karate testing is intended to help a student learn something they did not know about themself, the lesson is priceless when the lesson is lived and learned. It is true; with a willing mind anything is possible!  Inspiring demonstrations were observed yet, more importantly, confidence was born in the candidates who submitted themselves to the rigor of intense assessements and grading that demanded correct form, a positive attitude, and an intense fighting spirit, all under the microscope of a public demonstration among peers, family and community members, some known, some not.  We at USA Karate Academy value the art of traditional karate-do and acknowledge and appreciate the families that treasure the same values.

Congratulations to Anel Ruiz! Anel is elevated to the rank of Shodan August 7, 2011

August 15, 2011

USA Karate Academy dojo is happy to congratulate Anel Ruiz for passing her test and being elevated to the rank of Shodan.  Anel Ruiz is a student of Shorecrest High School and has been training in Shito-Ryu under the direction of Joni Sharrah for almost 10 years.  Anel is currently an assistant instructor at USA Karate Academy and has overcome many challenges through the years to achieve her newly earned rank. Anel’s rank promotion serves as a positive example for the up and coming youths  in that they get to see their assistant teacher set and achieve her long term goals.  As Anel recounts her journey toward preparing for and earning the rank of Shodan she reflected about her obstacles whereby a year ago, due to a severe ankle injury sustained while playing soccer, Anel lost her focus and felt like giving up karate.  When asked what got her back on track Anel says that she just needed a reminder of why she was in karate and found the needed reinforcement after talking with Shihan Joni.  ” I feel it has put into perspective where karate fits in my life”.  Anel credits her karate trainig at USA Karate Academy for providing structure in her life and teaching lessons beyond just kicking and punching that seem to be missing in today’s society, such as respect for authority, confidence and how to feel good about yourself.  When asked what message she may have for her kohai (students that she mentors), Anel said, ” When in doubt about your karate training, talk to Shihan Joni”.  In closing Anel says, ” Karate training is not easy but it is all worth it in the end”.
