When:
July 15 – July 19, Monday through Friday, 8:30-3:30
Before care is available from 7:30 am to 8:30 am.
After care is available from 3:30 pm to 6:00 pm

How much:
$250.00 for camp week (Includes the field trip)
Add $25.00 for Before Care 7:30 am – 8:30 am
Add $45.00 for After Care 3:30 pm – 6:00 pm
OR, add $60.00 for BOTH Before and After Care
Add $14 for AAU (Amateur Athletic Union membership fee) if not a current student of USA Karate Academy

Fees include a camp T-shirt and daily snacks (but bring a lunch).

Deposit due by June 21st $50.

Attention: Campers must bring a sack lunch. Campers should wear their gi for the morning sessions, and bring play clothes for times when we do arts and crafts.

Important dates:

We had a wonderful time at the tournament.  Thank you so much for all your help. I think the time and score keepers did a fantastic job. We also had a smooth running event and finished all events at 3:00 pm.

In addition, having Sensei Linda Donner, member of the AAU Karate National Referee Council update the referee corps the night before as well as oversee the officials the day of the tournament created a consistent level of play in all the rings.

All athletes that participated have qualified to participate in the AAU Karate National Championships to be conducted in Cincinatti, Ohio June 26-June 29th. Details can be obtained by visiting www.aaukarate.org.

The instructor repeatedly said, “When your turn is over, do not hand the gun to your partner. Instead, they’ll turn their back, and you’ll just drop it on the ground so they can pick it up and start the exercise over.”

…

That sounded weird. You’re right next to the person, why would you drop the gun so they had to pick it up?
Without having to ask why, the instructor explained himself: “If you practice handing the gun over to your partner now, you might end up handing the gun over to an actual assailant later. Don’t laugh, I’ve seen it happen.” Then he showed us surveillance camera footage of someone doing it in robbery.

Skip steps now, you’ll skip them later. Cut corners now, you’ll cut them later. You get used to what you do most of the time.

Two weeks before the Yakima tournament, something hit me. I missed competing. My fear of disappointing myself had previously been stronger than my urge to compete again, but suddenly, that had changed. So I committed to the Yakima tournament before I had a chance to change my mind, and I am so glad that I did.

I did disappoint myself. I didn’t do as well as I had hoped, and my flaws were clearly illustrated to me. However, instead of coming back to the dojo frustrated and discouraged, I came back with renewed fire. As Shihan Joni always says, “you learn more when you lose,” and I definitely learned a lot. I learned exactly what my weaknesses are, and what I need to work on.

There are some things that you can get only from a tournament. Sometimes only a tournament can make things click for you, make you understand, from direct experience, exactly what Shihan, the Senseis, and Senpais have been telling you repeatedly in class. Shihan tells us that you won’t truly learn to block your face until you’ve been hit there several times, and you won’t truly learn to close your fist until you have sprained or broken your thumb. Like those two experiences, a tournament is a direct experience. It is where you apply what you know, and learn what works and what doesn’t. I came back from this tournament with a mental list of what I need to work on, and a renewed passion for training. What did you learn from your most recent tournament experience?
